This excitng new walk pioneered by Kevin Langan provides a connecting link between Scotland's existing long distance trails, the West Highland & Great Glen routes in the west and the Speyside Way & Moray Coastal Trail in the north.
Travel through some of Scotland's most beautiful and unspoilt scenery - a mixture of Highland glens such as Glens Spean, Banchor and Badenoch, alongside the shores of rivers and lochs to reach the mighty Cairngorm Mountains at Aviemore.
From the centre of Fort William the route follows the road out of town, joins the cycle track to the Nevis Range Gondola and winds through the Glen Spean forests heading eastwards. From Spean Bridge the way follows the River Spean, passing near Laggan Dam, Moy Reservoir, Loch Laggan and Ardverikie House, the setting of the famous 'Monarch of the Glen' TV series. The eastern edge of Loch Laggan is home to the largest inland fresh water beach in Europe, with stunning views west to the Munro's bounding Loch Treig.
From Laggan village traverse uninhabited Glen Banchor passing the remains of dwellings wiped out during the highland clearances. At Kingussie pause to visit the imposing ruin of Ruthven Barracks before joining the waymarked Badenoch Way to the quiet village of Kincraig. The route continues through the forest arriving at Loch an Eilein with its famous 'Island Castle', said to be the stronhold of the infamous 'Wolf of Badenoch'. Just a short walk now through Rothiemurcas Forest to arrive at the bustling village of Aviemore in the heart of the beautiful Cairngorm National Park.
The route mostly follows paths and forest trails with some road walking near Spean Bridge and Laggan. It is waymarked only through the Badenoch Way around Insh marshes.
Suitable for walkers of average fitness, the
East Highland Way provides an opportunity to experience the abundant
archaeology, history and wildlife of this magical area.
Accommodation The East Highland Way can offer
all types of accommodation including bunkhouses, youth hostels,
b&bs, inns, guest houses and hotels. (However, it should be
noted that not all types are available at every stage and the availability
of hostels and bunkhouses is limited). Two overnight locations have no B&B establishments nearby and transfers are required to the nearest establishment.
Luggage Transfer Easyways can arrange your luggage transport on the route even if you have booked the accommodation yourself. Please contact us for a quotation. As it is a new route with an as yet limited number of walkers, luggage is moved on an individual basis with consequently higher costs than on busy routes.
You will see from our guidelines
on the PRICES and BOOKINGS page that we have banded the different types
of accommodation. This provides an indication of what you are likely
to pay. And, you can choose a mixture of types of accommodation
each day - a B&B, one evening, and a Hotel, the next. It is
designed to be totally flexible and to suit clents’ individual
preferences and needs.
