The Fife Coastal Path

Location mapNot many walks have such an impressive beginning –  right in the shadow of  the girders of the mighty Forth Rail Bridge! The Fife Coastal Path begins at North Queensferry on the north shore of the Forth estuary and snakes its way around the golden coastline of this historic county arriving at its northern termination at the Tay Road Bridge. The waymarked route of  81miles(135km) is suitable for walkers of all ages and abilities, consisting of a mixture of rough paths, sandy beaches, surfaced promenades and roadside footpaths. Experience dramatic cliffs and caves, rocky seashores, miles of sandy beaches, quaint fishing villages and stunning sea views.

Forth BridgeThere is an abundance of history in the castles, small burghs and picturesque fishing villages where many small harbours bear witness to the prosperous trading links which formerly existed between Fife and the Low Countries. There are scenic views to Inchcolm Island and the Isle of May both of which have a religious heritage dating from the 9th Century. These islands and the cliffs of the coastline are a haven for wildlife: observe basking seals and many varieties of seabirds including Puffins, Kittiwakes, Razorbills, Guillemots,  Shags, Terns, Oystercatchers and Eider Duck.

Towards the end of the walk arrive at the ancient town of St Andrews, the “World Home of Golf”. It has miles of beautiful golden sands, seven golf courses, centuries of history illustrated by the ruined castle and cathedral and a special unique atmosphere found only in such a historic university town.

Complete the journey though Tentsmuir Forest to Tayport at the mouth of the River Tay and arrive at the finish at the Tay Road Bridge.

The Fife Coastal Path can offer youth Hostels, b&bs, inns, guest houses and hotels. However, it should be noted that not all types are available at every stage.

You will see from our guidelines on Accommodation Prices that we have divided the different types of accommodation into bands. This is to give you an indication of what you are likely to pay. However, you can choose mixture of types, eg a Youth Hotel one evening and a hotel the next. It is designed to be totally flexible and to suit each client's individual needs. All subject to availability of course!
