The Great Glen Way

| Route Options | Route Map | Gallery | Prices & Booking |

Route overview The Great Glen Way is 73 miles (117 km) long and was officially opened by Prince Andrew in April 2002. Starting from the end of the West Highland Way, this excellent continuation northwards starts at Fort William and travels through a great variety of landscape to its completion in the highland capital city of Inverness.

From Scotland’s highest peak, Ben Nevis at Fort William, the walk takes you along the tree lined towpaths of the Caledonian Canal and passes by the beautiful lochs of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness. The trek makes its way through various forest tracks and then over Ness Islands and on to its finishing point at the Inverness Castle.

Loch LochyThe standards of accommodation and hospitality on this trek are excellent as you travel northwards through remote villages and experience the world famous Loch Ness and all of its mystery. If you prefer a longer holiday, then why not consider the addition of this trek to the West Highland Way. Alternatively, many walkers who have previously completed the West Highland Way and appreciated the dramatic scenery of the northern stages have chosen to walk from Crianlarich to Fort William and then continue on the Great Glen Way, making this a wonderous 130 km trek.

The Great Glen Way can offer youth Hostels, b&bs, inns, guest houses and hotels. However, it should be noted that not all types are available at every stage.

You will see from our guidelines on Accommodation Prices that we have divided the different types of accommodation into bands. This is to give you an indication of what you are likely to pay. However, you can choose mixture of types, eg a Youth Hostel one evening and a hotel the next. It is designed to be totally flexible and to suit each client's individual needs. All subject to availability of course!
