The Kintyre Way

Location mapLaunched in August 2006, the Kintyre Way is Scotland’s latest long distance walk. The waymarked trail begins at Tarbert harbour in the north and criss-crosses this beautiful peninsula to end at Dunaverty on its southern shore. The Kintyre Peninsula is joined to the mainland by such a narrow isthmus of land that it has historically been regarded as an island. From its central spine of higher ground there are wonderful views to the islands of Gigha , Jura and on a clear day, Ireland, in the west and Arran, in the east. There are woodlands, rolling farmland, inland lochs, coastal plains, sandy beaches and rocky shores. The wildlife includes roe deer, grouse, red squirrels, hen harriers and golden eagles, together with a wide variety noisy sea birds. Kintyre is extremely rich in historic and archaeological remains and there are interpretation boards at key points along the way.Tarbert

The Kintyre Way is 89miles(142km) long and would be regarded as of a moderate grade with some rougher ground particularly on the last section between Machrihanish and Dunaverty. There are no steep slopes or severe gradients and most of the climbing is quite gradual but it can be tiring when wet underfoot and the remoteness of the last section demands caution in bad weather and possibly compass and map reading skills.

The Kintyre Way can offer B&B's, inns, guest houses and hotels. However, it should be noted that not all types are available at every stage.

You will see from our guidelines on Accommodation Prices that we have divided the different types of accommodation into bands. This is to give you an indication of what you are likely to pay. However, you can choose mixture of types, eg a B&B one evening and a hotel the next. It is designed to be totally flexible and to suit each client's individual needs. All subject to availability of course!
