The South Loch Ness Trail is an exciting new walk exploring the peaceful undiscovered southern shore of the famous Loch. The South Loch Ness Trail begins near Fort Augustus and ends after a 28 miles walk at the outskirts of the Highland capital of Inverness.

From Loch Tarff four miles north of Fort Augustus the waymarked South Loch Ness Trail climbs to the elevated Suidhe Viewpoint which offers spectacular loch views: from here the trail drops down through woodland to the tiny village of Whitebridge named after the historic General Wade bridge built in 1732. At Foyers visit the famous Falls of Foyers, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the Highlands. The hydro-electric power from the Foyers River supplied the former aluminium factory still situated at the edge of the loch.

The South Loch Ness Trail now climbs over to the lochside village of Inverfarigaig nestling under the brooding crags of the hill, Dun Dearduil. Perhaps divert to climb to the top and view the remains of the Iron Age Fort. There is also another Wade bridge and at the lochside a Thomas Telford pier. From Inverfarigaig the trail follows the "corkscrew" road climbing to a highpoint on the forestry track which gives spectacular views across the loch to Urquhart Castle and Drumnadrochit. At Dores the wide sweep of the beach pebble gives the best views down the length of the loch and from there follow the lochside to the end of the waymarked trail at Torbrek 3.5 miles from Inverness.

This South Loch Ness Trail can be walked in either direction but there will be some road walking involved at each end whether from Fort Augustus or Inverness. It will be a great idea to combine it with the Great Glen Way for a circular Loch Ness walk or continue to finish in Fort William.

The standards of accommodation and hospitality on this trek are excellent. The South Loch Ness Trail can offer b&bs, inns, guest houses and hotels. However, it should be noted that not all types are available at every stage. You will see from our guidelines on the PRICES and BOOKINGS Page that we have banded the different types of accommodation. This provides an indication of what you are likely to pay. And, you can choose a mixture of types of accommodation each day - a B&B, one evening, and a hotel, the next. It is designed to be totally flexible and to suit clients’ individual requirements.
