Highlights of the Dunnet to Thurso Leg

The NHW route passes through some truly breath taking landscapes. The Dunnet to Thurso leg is no exception, with highlights including: Dunnet Head lighthouse and Dunnet Bay. Walking in the highlands is a great idea for a holiday! Walking holidays in Scotland are always a unique experience!

Dunnet Head Lighthouse

The Dunnet Head Lighthouse is located at the most northern point on the British mainland. The lighthouse was built in 1831 by Robert Stevenson, the grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson (the famous writer and poet). The beautiful lighthouse stands at 66 feet tall, perched on the top of the 300-foot cliff of Easter Head. Although the lighthouse is now automated, the lighthouse is still a brilliant place to visit. Walking in the highlands can be an amazing experience!

Dunnet Bay

Just beyond Dunnet Head Lighthouse is the stunning Dunnet Bay. Dunnet Bay is a beautiful, sheltered, white sandy beach backed by sand dunes. The bay is a very peaceful leg of the route, with plenty of opportunities to see wildlife such as oystercatchers, eider ducks and curlew. As well as being great for walkers, Dunnet Head is a brilliant spot for sunbathing, swimming and surfing – as long as the weather permits.

Castlehill Heritage Centre is located within the town, and provides a brilliant opportunity to learn more about the area.
