Beautiful surroundings at John O’Groats!

EasyWays Supporter and Friend of the NHW

Back in 1992 Dan Mackay formed a walking group, the Caithness Waybaggers and with their help, he hoped to create a new walking route which would be called the Caithness Way. Unfortunately, access issues and lack of support lead the project to be abandoned for many years. That was until 2010, when Dunnet Head Educational Trust got involved, together with LetsGoNorth, whose goal is achieving “national trail” status for the route.

The route is a 114 mile (182.5Km), coastal route which links Duncansby Head, just west of John O’ Groats to Cape Wrath. The route features dramatic sea cliffs and beautiful white sandy beaches, wildlife such as puffins and sea eagles and it’s focal point is Dunnet Head, the northern most point of mainland Britain.

EasyWays became enthusiastic supporters of this route in 2014 and our involvement can be seen on the official website northhighland-way.com and the way markers.

We’re currently planning another trip up north in April, to see how the route is progressing and visit some of the accommodation providers. So check back for future posts and some photos, hopefully some of those comical puffins!
