Local Food and Wine

If you do decide on the Via Francigena route in Italy, it comes with the chance to sample the great local food and wine of the region. There are so many historically rich places in Tuscany that your walk will be a never ending opportunity to see the real countryside up close and personal. We even offer the opportunity to visit a Fattoria (working farm) near San Gimignano for a tasting of wines from the Chianti Hills with lunch included.

History

horse race

Join EasyWays and witness the historic “Palio,” a bareback horse race in Piazza del Campo.

The towns throughout Tuscany regularly host celebrations and events in honour of their past and the most renowned takes place in Siena the town centre Piazza del Campo. The EasyWays team can help schedule your travel in Siena to coincide with Palio – the bareback horse race that dates back to the middle ages and is akin to being transported into a set from “Game of Thrones”. This is a once in a lifetime experience and should not be missed!

Scenery

And finally, an obvious reason for walking the Via Francigena route is because of the never-ending beautiful scenery you will see. The EasyWays tour begins in picturesque San Miniato before heading south to Gambassi Terme and onward to Monteriggioni and Siena, where the route really opens up with almost entirely rural footpaths well away from the road network and busy towns. It is because of these rural footpaths that our walkers fall in love with the tranquillity of Via Francigena.
